Glaucoma Testing in Eastlake, Ohio
A glaucoma test begins by measuring the pressure inside the eyes. A common glaucoma test is the “puff of air,” technically known as non-contact tonometry, or NCT. For NCT, the test begins with you putting your chin on the machine’s chin rest. While you look at a light inside the machine, the doctor or optician will puff a small burst of air at your open eye.
This is completely painless and the tonometer does not touch your eye! Based on your eye’s resistance to the puff of air, the machine calculates the eye’s intraocular pressure or IOP. If the pressure is high, you may be at risk or have glaucoma.
If that is the case, Dr. Rahman refers you to an ophthalmologist. Once diagnosed with the disease, she follows up with you periodically to make sure you are on track with the necessary medications and stabilized eye pressure.
The Importance of a Glaucoma Test
At first, open-angle glaucoma has no symptoms. It causes no pain. Vision stays normal. Glaucoma can develop in one or both eyes and over time, damages the eye’s optic nerve and can result in vision loss and even blindness.
According to the National Eye Institute, “Without treatment, people with glaucoma will slowly lose their peripheral (side) vision. As glaucoma remains untreated, people may miss objects to the side and out of the corner of their eye. They seem to be looking through a tunnel. Over time, straight-ahead (central) vision may decrease until no vision remains.”
Immediate treatment for early-stage, open-angle glaucoma can delay progression of the disease. That’s why early diagnosis is very important and at My Clear Eyes, we perform a glaucoma test before your initial eye exam.
Schedule your appointment today and let Dr. Rahman and her staff give you the best possible eye care.
